Prizes and awards

The IAS and its partners sponsor every year a number of scientific prizes and awards to reward promising young and established researchers who are doing outstanding work in HIV research.

Prizes and awards to be awarded at AIDS 2018

• Prudence Mabele Prize - Biennial endowment

  The Prudence Mabele Prize is a new endowment named in honour of the life and work of Prudence Mabele, a trailblazing activist for the rights of women and people living with HIV. She was the first black woman to publicly reveal her HIV-positive status in South Africa in 1992, a founding member of the Treatment Action Campaign and founder of the Positive Women’s Network.

• Lange/Van Tongeren Prizes (IAS/ANRS) for Young Investigators – Annual prizes

  The US$2,000 Lange/van Tongeren Prizes for Young Investigators are jointly funded by the IAS and the Agence Nationale de Recherche sur le sida et les hépatites virales (ANRS) to support young researchers who demonstrate innovation, originality, rationale and quality in the field of HIV research. One prize is awarded to the top-scoring abstracts in each of the conference tracks. In 2015, the Young Investigator Prize was permanently renamed in memory of Joep Lange and Jacqueline van Tongeren.

• Women, Girls and HIV Investigator’s Prize - Annual prize

  The US$2,000 prize is funded by the IAS and UNAIDS, with the support of the International Community of Women with HIV/AIDS (ICW) and the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW). The vulnerability of women and girls to HIV infection and accelerated disease progression is well documented. As HIV incidence continues to increase among women and girls, particularly in resource-limited settings, research on gender-related issues, including community-based interventions and investigations, will provide critical evidence and information on which to base our response.

• IAS TB/HIV Research Prizes - Annual prizes

  The five US$2,000 IAS TB/HIV Research Prizes are incentives for researchers to investigate pertinent research questions that affect TB/HIV co-infection and operational effectiveness of implementing core TB/HIV collaborative services, including TB/HIV service integration research. The prizes are presented to the five top-scoring abstracts in any of these areas.

• IAS Injecting Drug Use Research Prizes - Annual prizes

  The three US$2,000 IAS Injecting Drug Use Research Prizes are incentives for researchers to address important research questions around the management of HCV infection and/or HIV/HCV co-infection in people who inject drugs, in particular through interdisciplinary research on drug dependence, harm reduction and/or drug policy. The prizes are presented to the three top-scoring abstracts in any of these areas.

• IAS President’s Award – Biennial prize

  The IAS President’s Award recognizes the achievements of an individual who demonstrates a long history of leadership and excellence as a pioneer or advocate at the forefront of the response to HIV and AIDS. The award highlights an individual’s contribution that results in increased knowledge, skills, creative solutions or evidence-based policies and programmes to enhance the global response to HIV.

• Prize for Excellence in Research Related to the Needs of Children Affected by AIDS – Biennial prize

  There is an urgent need to advance the scientific understanding of paediatric HIV and the psychosocial impact of the epidemic on children in order to enhance practices of prevention, treatment and care. With the aim of drawing the attention of the scientific community to children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS, the IAS and the Coalition for Children Affected by AIDS (CCABA) Prize for Excellence in Research Related to the Needs of Children Affected by AIDS was first awarded at the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria.

• Elizabeth Taylor Human Rights Award – Biennial prize

  The Elizabeth Taylor Human Rights Award recognizes the efforts of individuals who have achieved major breakthroughs or shown exceptional courage in their efforts to advocate for human rights in the field of HIV. The award is supported by the IAS and the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) to pay a lasting tribute to Dame Elizabeth Taylor, a highly visible, vocal and relentless champion of human rights in the HIV field.

• Robert Carr Research Award – Biennial prize

  The Robert Carr Research Award recognizes a research project conducted by a community-academia partnership that has led to evidence-based programmes and/or influenced policies in the field of HIV to guide a human rights-based response. This award is a joint initiative of the IAS, the International Council of AIDS Service Organizations, Human Rights Watch and the Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health and Human Rights. The award is sponsored by the IAS, ICASO, the Open Society Foundations and the Robert Carr Fund for civil society networks.

• Dominique Dormont Award

  The US$5,000 IAS and ANRS Dominique Dormont prize is funded by the Dominique Dormont Association to support young researchers working on chronic conditions in humans, with a particular focus on the interface between HIV and other chronic diseases. The prize highlights researchers who demonstrate originality, rationale, quality and a multidisciplinary and integrative approach in the field of HIV and AIDS research.

• CIPHER Research Grant – Annual programme 

  The CIPHER Research Grant provides a unique opportunity for early-stage investigators to address targeted research gaps in paediatric and adolescent HIV in resource-limited settings, for evidence-informed policy. The grants are for up to US$ 150,000 for up to two years, and 80% of grants awarded go to applicants from LMICs. CIPHER is an initiative of the IAS; it is made possible through support from CIPHER Founding Sponsor ViiV Healthcare and Janssen.

• CIPHER Growing the Leaders of Tomorrow Fellowship Programme – Biannual programme

  The CIPHER Growing the Leaders of Tomorrow Fellowship Programme contributes to strengthened HIV clinical research capacity in high-burden countries in sub-Saharan Africa by providing two-year research fellowships to emerging young leaders in paediatric HIV clinical science. The fellowship provides up to US$ 70,000 for the fellow to work with an established mentor on a funded research project that addresses a key gap in paediatric HIV clinical science. CIPHER is an initiative of the IAS; this programme is made possible through support from CIPHER Founding Sponsor ViiV Healthcare.

• Me and My Healthcare Provider Award

  The IAS Me and My Healthcare Provider campaign puts a spotlight on frontline healthcare providers who address the HIV-related needs of key populations, often in the face of discriminatory laws, traditions and belief systems. These populations include men who have sex with men, transgender people, people who inject drugs and sex workers. The campaign is driven by members of key populations who nominate their healthcare providers for #DoingTheRightThing and making a tangible difference in their lives.

• IAS/Abivax Research-for-Cure Academy Fellowship Prize

  The IAS Research-for-Cure Academy provides training on state of the art HIV cure research to talented early- to mid-career investigators and clinical scientists working in resource-constrained settings. This US$2,000 annual prize is presented to one outstanding fellow based on their engagement during the academy, collaborative spirit during the project work and continued engagement in the HIV cure field.
