Engagement tours at AIDS 2018

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to create a monument for LGBT victims and the first to legalize same-sex marriages. In the roaring ’80 and ’90s, Amsterdam was the gay capital of the world. The tour tells the story of gay emancipation and the social movement that made it possible. This is a walking tour.

This tour starts with a presentation on how SHM monitors HIV in the Netherlands. It highlights the steps involved in the data collection process, which uses SHM’s new, state-of-the-art data entry system, DataCapTree. Visitors will be given the opportunity to work with a model of DataCapTree and enter mock data into the system themselves. The subsequent steps of quality control, data processing and analysis will be discussed, and examples of research and reporting will be presented.

About the organizer:

Stichting HIV Monitoring (SHM) registers people living with HIV in the Netherlands and comprehensively maps HIV treatment outcomes in the country. Working with all 26 Dutch HIV treatment centres, SHM systematically collects HIV data for the long-term follow up of all registered individuals. The outcome of SHM’s research and collaborations provides tangible input into policy guidelines and further improves HIV care in the Netherlands.

Participants will learn about the Dutch harm reduction approach, the situation in Amsterdam and the specific harm reduction services within De Regenboog Groep. The group will focus on services for the homeless, including existing models in low-threshold facilities to reinforce harm reduction (the actual situation and the challenges). To protect the privacy of its visitors, the group cannot organize a visit of its drop-in-centres. However, the presentation gives insight into daily practices and provides pictures and video materials. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss points.

De Regenboog Groep (the Rainbow Group) / Correlation Network is an Amsterdam-based NGO committed to people who find themselves in a situation of social exclusion due to homelessness, drug and alcohol use and mental health problems. The organization provides low-threshold services and harm reduction services, such as drop-in centres, night shelters, psychosocial support, drug consumption rooms and a needle exchange programme. More than 500 homeless people and hard drug users use these services daily. De Regenboog Groep works in close collaboration with local partners. It is the host of Correlation, the European network that works for social inclusion and health.

Organizers will focus on drug consumption rooms, an effective harm reduction strategy to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C among people who use drugs. Participants will be shown the IHLIA centre with its library, exhibition and information desk. A presentation provides insight into the goals and purpose of its work. The organization presents a selection of photos taken by Ajamu X, a black British LGBT artist, a series of portraits of young black LGBT artists and activists, and a series of portraits taken during the previous International AIDS Conference.

IHLIA LGBT Heritage has been based in the main public library since 2007. It was, however, founded 40 years ago and now has one of the oldest and largest LGBT archives in the world. The organization collects and make accessible LGBT heritage in all forms. It offers online access through its website, and also assists users with their searches. IHLIA also serves the academic world and policy makers. People from all over the world visit the heritage centre.

The Going Dutch tour is aimed at giving background information on how Mainline started and grew to become a significant player in the harm reduction field over the past 25 years. The tour highlights the role of harm reduction within HIV prevention programmes and Dutch drug policy. As Mainline is considered to be a knowledge hub on drugs, delegates’ knowledge on different types of drugs will be tested in a playful way with our “Dr Mainline game”.
